When you can’t sleep!

Some nights it is just not going to happen.  Your mind is too active or it is flooded with memories.  Now that I am retired I really don’t need to fuss about not falling asleep.  Last night was one of those nights.  I love doing Selfies.  I am half way through my third Selfie sketchbook.  I have a large mirror next to my computer.   A little daunting first thing in the morning or in the middle of the night but it works for the majority of my self portraits. I like that I sit still!  Earlier in the day I sat in the coffee shop and tried to capture people getting a snack and some coffee to go.  I wanted to scream out “stand still”.  So my struggle continues sketching people out and about!

Here are two “Selfies” drawn at 2 a.m.  The first one is from a photo when I was at work.  I  worked in a fire district and was the photographer at their Burn to Learn events.  The second one is from looking into the mirror at 2 a.m. I had combed my hair and I added the ear-rings for the fun of it.Carmel1web

Here We Are!

This week I am practicing contour drawings. – blind contour and point to point.  An exercise from Sketching Now – Foundations, an online sketching course with Liz Steel.   Liz Steel lives in my home town, Sydney, Australia.

So after countless contour drawings of spice jars and boxes of crackers I turned around and caught my husband, Dwight, while watching TV.  He looked a little lonely so I added a “selfie” of myself
