Last Week!

The weeks are getting busy with spring like weather arriving in Oregon.  The sailing season is around the corner.  So sketching each day takes a new turn.  The following sketches capture my activities from last week!

Starbucks at Safeway

Starbucks at Lancaster Mall.  Still working with the Pentel brush for the dark spots and hair.

Early morning sketch of my coffee cup and pen.  This was exactly what was sitting in front of me!

What to sketch when you are playing Gin Rummy with a friend.  My new runners from Costco!

The week is not complete without one or two selfies! I am playing around with water soluble ink in a Lamy Pen with a fine point nib!

I found myself looking at perspective this week.  I really want to get back to sketching some buildings. So I started out with a sofa.  I should have done a scan of the preliminary drawing.  It was a simple box, no details and just lightly drawn.  I followed up with a detailed sketch of the sofa over the preliminary drawing.  This is the same procedure I use when drawing a building. Once again I am using a Lamy Pen with a fine nib.  The water soluble ink is from a black Lamy Ink cartridge.  Something I picked up from the workshop with Marc Taro Holmes workshop – Sketching People in Motion on Craftsy.

Capturing People!

This week I pushed aside all other sketching to focus on capturing people in motion. I am currently working through the Marc Taro Holmes workshop with Craftsy – Drawing People in Motion.  I am a firm believer in practice.   I wish every sketch worked but that is not the case.  However, instead of discounting the whole sketch I try to find what areas do work within a sketch.

I visited three different coffee shops last week.   Here are some of the sketches  The first stop Starbucks in Lancaster Mall in Salem, Oregon.

The second stop Starbucks inside Safeway in Stayton, Oregon.

If I don’t have time to paint on location or would rather complete them at home I make a note of the colors in pencil. Except this time I ignored my notes to move away from the dull colors of winter!

The black contact points and hair is from a Pentel Brush Pen.  This  brush pen is fun to use however you can go from a thin line to a thick line very quickly.  Slowly but surely I am getting the feel of the brush.

The last stop was the IKE Box in Salem, Oregon.

A good start and end to the week!

It was just the in between period that was not so good.  I started the week sketching at two different Starbucks. One inside a mall and one inside our local Safeway store.  A great location.  Lots of chairs and tables to spread out your supplies.  The place was full of activity from Safeway and Starbucks.

These are sketches from the Starbucks inside the mall.

These are sketches from the Starbucks at Safeway and were also a part of my SketchingNow Foundations online course.

Unfortunately venturing out is not without risks.  I came down with some form of the flu and became housebound.  It was just me and that mirror again.

The week ended with a visit to Starbucks in Safeway before going to the doctors to revisit sketching in the doctor’s office and finally back to Starbucks at Safeway while my prescription was filled.  I sketched my way through the day!
